An Evening with the the "Doctor Broad"
An Evening with the "Doctor Broad"
An Evening with the “Doctor Broad” is one more in a series of book signings, but this one will be an entire evening with “Barbara” - light refreshments, a talk, and of course, an opportunity to purchase an autographed book.
The event will be held on Friday, October 4th from 6-9pm at the Providence Marriott Downtown, 1 Orms St., in Providence. The event is expected to sell out.
Dr. Barbara Roberts, cardiologist and author, will join us for an evening of light fare and book signing of her newly released book The Doctor Broad: A Mafia Love Story. The book will be for sale throughout the evening.
The Doctor Broad: A Mafia Love Story is Roberts’ life story, a tale that rivals anything scripted in Hollywood. There are people in the know who say that she caused the downfall of the New England Mafia. She did this, not by killing someone, or sending someone to jail, but by keeping someone alive, and out of prison, for about a year too long. During this time, Roberts navigated life in two separate worlds. In the “straight” world, she was a single mother of three, the first woman to practice adult cardiology in Rhode Island, and an active feminist. In the other world she was the physician whose testimony prevented Raymond L. S. Patriarca, the head of the New England Mafia, from having to go to trial, and the secret lover of the alleged #3 man in the New England Mafia, Louis “Baby Shanks” Manocchio. (APN News)
The evening partially supports the nonprofit organization, The Back to School Celebration of RI’s effort to purchase backpacks and school for over 16,000 students at eleven different sites.
About Back to School Celebration of RI
Back to School Celebration of RI is a 501 (c) (3) Non-Profit Organization whose mission is to provide outstanding quality educational programs helping individuals and families reach their full intellectual potential.
We value diversity and believe that everyone can become a contributing member of society.
In 2018, the Back to School Celebration event overall was a great success. Backpacks and school supplies were distributed to almost 16,000 students at eleven different sites. Students and their families enjoyed a day of entertainment, food and music. Families that attended the event received educational information and information about free services provided at different organizations in the State of Rhode Island.
The Back to School Celebration of RI was originally planned by Mr. Melvin Bell, Program Officer for the Rhode Island Foundation, and Jorge Cardenas, who at the time was a Field Coordinator for Parents Making a Difference. These two caring individuals had a great love for children. They wished to establish an organization whose goal would be to involve single parents in the education of their children, thereby helping to create an atmosphere of trust and open communication between schools, students and families.
Beside of the educational component the Back to School of RI has been hosting the Back to School Celebration Event since 1999. Growing steadily in popularity, the Back to School Celebration event continue to build wide support and momentum throughout the community. The inaugural celebration in 1999 was held nine years ago at just one site, hosting approximately 600 Providence School student and families. Since its inception and development by Sodexho School Services, the back to School celebration has grown significantly. In 2018, the Back to School Celebration event overall was a great success.
