Eventually, 30 cameras...

1st Day of School, Pawtucket:  S-l-o-w D-o-w-n

As school starts today in the city of Pawtucket, so does the beginning of what will eventually be over 30 red-light cameras and speed zone cameras.  They will carry fines of $95 and $50, respectively. There will be a 30-day grace period where a warning will apply. But this is the time to practice s-l-o-w driving in the city of Pawtucket.

People joke they can’t drive around Pawtucket and the one ways keep changing - the hue and cry that met this type of system in Providence, has not realized for the Pawtucket implementation.

The initial cameras coming on line are as follows:

Intersection Cameras:

·       Cottage St & Newport Ave (Rt 1A)

·       Prospect St @ Division St

·       Main St & Lonsdale Ave (Rt 122)

School Cameras:

·       Potter Burns Elementary School & Goff Middle School

·       Nathanael Greene Elementary School

·       Curtis Elementary School

·       Varieur Elementary School

·       Samuel Slater Middle School and Cunningham Elementary School

·       Shea High School

·       Jenks Middle School

·       Agnes Little Elementary School

·       Curvin McCabe Elementary School

Previously, the General Assembly passed legislation that revised the camera safety program. The changes included;

·       lowering the violation from $95.00 to $50.00 for school speed violations;

·       restricting school camera operations to school days only;

·       and limiting operations from 7:00am to 6:00pm.

While we are all talking about that, let’s be sure to kiss those wee ones - and older ones, too - goodbye and wish them the best for the new school year.
