Jumping on the JUMP Bikes

 

Interesting that the opening photo of JUMP! Bikes for Providence would feature a blurry image of the familiar red bike in motion on the marble steps of the RI State House. Easy to know that these bikes are not allowed where they are being showed.



A few weeks ago there were reports of the red bikes at the bottom of Waterplace park rivers, and in other shallow waterways.

 

After that, the prices changed for JUMP bikes, and soared, becoming out of reach of some in downtown Providence who used them to get around multiple times a day in the city. 

All of this, plus safety concerns, have prompted a Providence representative to call for a moratorium on JUMP bikes in his neighborhood while the local residents consider what they want to do about restrictions or instruction education for their proper use. Council President Michael Correia’s effort is extending this to electric scooters and the request would apply  to Mt. Pleasant and Manton Ave. areas of the city.

Far away  from home.

There are the sightings of the red bikes in cities and towns far away from Providence - opening photo here is from the back road neighborhood of Garden City, Cranston, where one bike seems to have taken up permanent residence and become shared by neighborhood youth. It doesn’t appear that anyone is paying for their use. At least drivers can see the bright red bike, though there are no sidewalks in the planned community, making safety an issue - and hopefully the bikes won’t make their way onto the very dangerous roadways of Sockanosset Crossroad and Reservoir or Pontiac Aves. Restricted to the neighborhood roadway, one wonders if they would be a colorful asset - but how many contained neighborhoods with extra-wide roads are there in Rhode Island?

 

The JUMP bike company is owned by Uber. As the first day of school approaches it’s a good time to shore up where these bikes are allowed to go, if people know how to properly use them, and determine if the nightly collections of the GPS-equipped bikes is happening.  How does a bike become a permanent resident of Garden City? Or Wakefield? Or Narragansett?  Or Pawtucket? All locations where they have been spotted. And how did prices soar once the bikes became popular and depended upon - going from $2 to $9 for 30 minutes? Time to jump on the details before JUMP bikes go flat.
