Pay raises for Congress?

Politico is reporting that House leaders in Washington want to give Congress a cost of living increase that could boost their salaries an extra $4,500 next year.

The salaries in Congress have been frozen at about $174,000 for the last ten years because of a decade long pay freeze.

Now House Democrats, who originally froze the raises in 2009, are proposing raises for Congressional members which are guaranteed by a 1989 federal ethics law.

Politico also reports that there is strong support in the House for the raises. So, when is enough, enough? You just can’t make this stuff up. With the rest of the country in unsettled waters, the minimum wage fight going on, and people struggling to make ends meet, Congress tries to give itself a raise. And they will, because it is in the federal law unless a freeze is upheld.

What a message they are sending to the American people. “Let them eat cake!”
