Rhode Island News Today continues its series on profiling RI small business. This week we are profiling Chalkstone Avenue Supermarket on 1050 Chalkstone Avenue, in Providence.

The Providence neighborhoods have always been known for their small ethnic markets that make up the fabric of our community. The local super markets have been an asset to the community serving residents and adding a foundation to our neighborhoods. Such is the super market owned by Juan Jimenez which is now called “Chalkstone Supermarket”.

Juan has owned the super market at 1050 Chalkstone avenue for 7 years. It was the former “Academy Supermarket” which had been a landmark in the Mt. Pleasant community for over forty years.

Chalkstone Supermarket offers a variety of services such as pick up and free delivery which is an asset to seniors and those with disabilities or without transportation. They sell a huge assortment of fruits and vegetables, both ethnic and imported. Every week Juan has specials on fresh meats, cold cuts, and cheeses. He even has a special meat pack made up of an assortment of meats and chicken specials.

The specials of the week are advertised in a circular that is distributed all over the neighborhood, so residents are aware of upcoming sales and special items. There is also a great deli counter, where you can order a huge Italian grinder made fresh to order.

Chalkstone Supermarket celebrates its 7th year anniversary by saying thank you to their customers. The owner Juan and his family has a free cookout in the parking lot serving hot dogs and cold drinks with music. Food specials were previewed there with a great outdoor assortment of vegetables and groceries at great prices. It was a good way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and to thank the loyal customers for their business.

Chalkstone Supermarket opens at 9am, seven days a week, and they are open most holidays, too. The market carries many kinds of ethnic foods as well as the traditional market specials. Juan and his staff work hard at making you feel welcome and will satisfy your every need.

So, stop in and say hello and see what the buzz is all about. Customers come from all over to try the fresh meats and produce. Remember to support your local neighborhood markets, they need our help to survive.

Chalkstone Supermarket is convenient and accessible, so give it a try - say RI News Today sent you!
